Students at country’s premier university, University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), are planning a protest march next week against the government’s move to acquire a K3 billion loan, PNG Edge reports.

The student council today held a forum to gauge views of the students, and SRC President, Bobby Yupi, said they needed at least two thirds of the student population’s support to sign a petition so they can move ahead with the protest.

Mr Yupi, a third year law student, also expressed concern over the continuning saga at the University of Technology (Unitech) on Lae and called for the Sevua report to be made public.

He also called for the government to come out clearly and explain how sidelined Unitech VC, Dr Albert Schram, is a threat to national security.

Meanwhile, Yupi is also awaiting clearance from police to conduct the protest march and hopes he will get it by this week.

If all the requirements are met by this week, the protest march to parliament could be scheduled for next Monday.
