Morobe Governor Kelly Naru says he wants to see justice prevail over the University of Technology saga now or else the issue will never be solved.

In an interview with PNG Edge, Governor Naru said that justice would only be realised when the Government made public the Sevua Report and implement its recommendations.

Yesterday, Naru visited the Unitech campus to speak to students who have boycotted classes until the Government re-instates Dr Albert Schram. Reports stated that Governor Naru had thrown his support behind the students.

Naru clarified with PNG edge that he did not make such a pledge but rather wanted to find a way forward.

“Basically I had two messages to give to the students,” said Naru.

“Firstly I urged them to go to classes and avoid boycotts and allow for a smooth operation of the university.”

“Secondly, I reiterated what Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said when he visited the campus last year that the Government would unconditionally implement the recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry.’’

Yesterday, Higher Education Minister Delilah Gore stated the government’s position on the Unitech saga which is a contrast to what the Prime Minister said in January last year.

In her statement, Gore said the Government would not undermine the University Council’s authority to negotiate with the students to appoint a new vice chancellor, and also the legal system where Dr Schram’s termination is being challenged in court.

She also asked the students to return to classes or expect appropriate actions taken by the Office of the Higher Education, the interim council, and the Acting Vice Chancellor.

Governor Naru said there was something wrong if what the Minister and the Prime Minister were saying were two different things.

He cautioned that the issues at Unitech could worsen if the undertaking made by the Prime Minister last year was not met.

Naru said “the Prime Minister made an assurance that they (Government) would unconditionally implement the recommendations from the Sevua Report.”

“And all other issues such as the legal battles which are subject to the Unitech issue are to be dealt with by that report.

“That report has to be made public and the recommendations implemented.”

Minister Gore stated yesterday that she has not seen the Sevua report as yet, and so could not comment on some of the recommendations.

When presenting the report to Prime Minister O’Neill last year, retired Judge Justice Mark Sevua said one of the key recommendations was for better administration in governance and management.

Naru said as a leader, sponsor, and parent, he wanted to see justice prevail and for the university to get back on track. And that was through implementation of the Sevua Report.

“Justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done. In my humble opinion, that is justice.”
